Supporting A Winning Team After losing to Flitwick twice in 4 days earlier in the week, Motley & Hope sponsored Biggleswade Town were out for revenge in the Heritage Final last Friday. Flitwick won the toss and decided to bat first. Phil Gurney batted sensibly for 56 runs but none of the other Flitwick batsman joined in as the Biggleswade bowlers dominated. Matt Twigg bowled tidily conceding just 20 runs in his 4 overs and Martin Whinnett picked up 3 wickets from his. With Shabz Hussain and Cole-Edwardes bowling the remaining overs, Flitwick limped to 114-7. In reply Town again lost early wickets with Jimmy Hart out in the 1st over and Kevin Wright following in the 3rd with the score on 18. Flitwick’s Damien Dunlop bowled extremely well once more and was well supported by Morris. With Martin Wright and Matt Twigg falling cheaply in strode Martin Whinnett, who had only scored 1 run against Flitwick this season. Whinnett latched onto the loose support bowlers and together with Cole-Edwardes turned the game in Biggleswade’s direction. He smashed Cockcroft for 2 big sixes in the 9th over and Shabz Hussain also joined in with two fours in Cockcroft’s next over as Whinnett dispatched another six down the ground. With the scores level in the 12th over, Whinnett looked certain to hit the winning runs, but was clean bowled for 43 by Dunlop who ended up with figures of 3-27 from his 4 overs. It was left to Shabz Hussain to hit the winning runs as Town won with 7 balls to spare. Gerry Gray awarded the Man of the Match award to Martin Whinnett for his match winning innings of 43 and bowling figures of 3-37. Kevin Wright collected the Heritage Cup for the second year running as Town showed that when it mattered they were capable of winning. |
