BIGGLESWADE TOWN CRICKET CLUB
WIN THE HOSPITAL CUP

Tight bowling from Martin Whinnett and an excellent innings from James Peacock were good enough for Motley and Hope sponsored Biggleswade Town Cricket Club to pick up their third Hospital Cup win in four years last Tuesday evening.

On a hot balmy evening, Westfield won the toss and decided to bat on a sun bleached Bedford Modern wicket.

A wicket apiece for Paul Ward and Matt Twigg had Westfield on the back foot at 25-2 in the 5th over.

Martin Whinnett bowled superbly, his figures of 0-20 off four overs ruined by Ahmed smashing him into the houses for an enormous six.

Ahmed and Irshad put on 77 for the 3rd wicket. Poor running between the wickets cost the pair some runs. A large crowd had gathered to watch and it seemed as though the heat and pressure of a final was affecting the Biggleswade fielders as a number of basic errors were made.

With wickets in hand they began to throw the bat. Harmit Bahra did not show the pressure and took 2-28 from his four overs. Jimmy Hart was unlucky not to take a wicket in his two overs and Westfield finished 124-4 off their 16 overs.

Biggleswade openers Jimmy Hart and Kevin Wright got off to a flier, taking 36 runs from the first 4 overs before Hart was out. In came James Peacock and another 44 runs were added in the next 6 overs. Wright hitting Irshad down the ground for 6 and Peacock manoeuvring the ball around the large outfield taking twos at will.

Wright was bowled by Irshad at the end of the 10th over with the score 80-2. Biggleswade needed 45 to win from 6 overs.

New batsman Twigg wasted no time in a cameo 16 from 10 balls to take the pressure off Biggleswade. His wicket brought bowling hero Whinnett to the crease who started confidently before being run out by a direct hit from the boundary as he ambled home.

Skipper Wright sent in the experienced Bahra to see Biggleswade home. Peacock remained unflustered and hit the 2nd ball of the 15th over for four. A single brought Bahra on strike with 5 more runs needed for victory.

A well placed edge just past the Westfield wicket keeper and the scores are tied. The next ball is a wide and Biggleswade have won the Hospital Cup once again.

Man of the Match was justifiably awarded to James Peacock who finished 38 not out and skipper Kevin Wright collected the Hospital Cup trophy for the 3rd time in 4 years.
